Position: Forestry Technician Lake Region RC & D

Description: A full-time position with the Lake Region RC & D subject to the availability

of funds. Under the supervision of the Watershed Forester and overseen by

the Lake Region RC&D Council, the Forestry Technician will provide

forestry services to private landowners and cooperating natural resource

agencies in the Marais des Cygnes River Basin in east central Kansas covering

all or parts of 13 counties.

Location: The position is headquartered at the Lake Region RC & D Office, Ottawa.

Responsibilities: The Forestry Technician will work directly under the Watershed Forester to:

• Implement plans prepared by the Watershed Forester to establish tree

planting and timber stand improvement practices.

• Provide on-site forestry technical assistance to private landowners

• Assist landowners in implementing best management practices

including timber sales, timber stand improvement and tree plantings.

• Provide forestry equipment and supplies to landowners and natural

resource professionals.

• Track and monitor all projects.

• Promote the Marais des Cygnes Watershed Riparian Initiative.

• Assist in the creation of a Forestry Business that implements and

maintains forestry practices for private landowners.

• Other responsibilities as identified by the Watershed Forester and

Forestry Management Committee.

Minimum

Qualifications: Minimum of a 2 year technical degree in a natural resources field with

preferred bachelor’s degree in forestry from an accredited program. The ability to

implement timber sales, tree planting and timber stand improvement practices. The ability

to work effectively with others, both individually and in a team setting; organizing and

carrying out work priorities; and communicating effectively both orally and in writing.

Computer skills such as database and word processing are required. Must be able to

perform physical work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions. Must have or the

ability to obtain a valid Kansas drivers license upon employment.

Salary: The salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.
